  1. When I first saw Belk, I thought of it as being a big box clothing store instead of a traditional suburban department store. Since the store I visited anchored a power center along with Wal-Mart, it reinforced my perception of the store.

With the somewhat gaudy columned entrance, this Belk store looks like a former big box that has been hastily renovated into a department store. The co-anchors of Parkway Plaza might as be Kroger and CVS/Pharmacy, because I'm getting the impression that this shopping center is a regional strip mall.

I might seem to have a harsh stance towards Belk, but the cluttered departments, esoteric architecture and banal web site give me a hard time of perceiving this department store as a competitor to Saks Incorporated, Dillards and Federated.

  2. This store is in a strip mall in a town of 15,000 people beside a busy interstate. Considering this Belk is over 15 years old and still looks good inside and out, I think it's great

I think your stance on Belk is very harsh and would hold even the most typical Belk up against its competition any day. Glitz does not always equal greatness and besides, Saks Incorporated, Dillards and Federated have any number of awful looking locations, to me anyway.

  7. I want to know does anybody other than me remember the mechanical dolls in all the windows of Belks in the 60's in Thomasville, NC?
