  2. The Penny's is the only original anchor left at Monmouth Mall. They're never changed the exterior--it's very massive in size and look.

  3. Actually, Penny's is not an original anchor (I started going to this mall in the mid-70's and it was a Penny's at the time). Deadmalls.com sums it up---
"In the mid-1960's a "shopping center" called "Monmouth Mall" opened about 5 miles to the north at anoher traffic circle this one the "Eatontown" circle was at the junction of routes 35 and 36, this out door center attracted popular anchors Bamberger's (now Macy's), and Montgomery Ward, when Wards pulled out of NJ entirely, Alexander's moved in. This shopping center was an instant hit and also intstantly was affecting the downtown areas of Red Bank and Asbury Park. By 1970 a major expansion was announced that would enclose the center, add a new 2nd floor wing and add 3 more anchor stores (JC Penney, Abraham and Straus and Hahne & Co, like Bamberger's, Hahne's was a Newark, NJ based chain). Left out of the expansion was local, Asbury Park based, Steinbach--long "THE" department store for the NJ Shore area."

  4. Nitek: I agree. This JCPenney is brutalist architecture of the highest order. The brick color's nice though.

Pat: Thanks for the additional info. I wonder when that store was actually built. It doesn't look like it was from 1970; more like 1980 or so.

  5. That J.C. Penney's was built in the mid 70's with the expansion of the mall. It may not be an original anchor perse, but they are the only anchor left in Monmouth Mall that is in it's original building. I grew up in Neptune N.J. and frequented this mall very often. This Penney's even had a full service restaurant in the back of its lower level facing the parking lot. Ate there often.
