Hudson Belk, Crabtree Valley Mall, Raleigh, North Carolina. The original three-story portico with two multi-tiered chandeliers before it was obstructed by an addition to the mall's parking deck, 2003. (Wake County, North Carolina Real Estate)

  1. Very cool! It almost has a dramatic feel to it.

  2. This is the first really big department store I ever went to. I think it was in 1980, but it could have been anywhere from 1979 to 1982. I imagine I wasn't much more than 4 or 5.

Anyway, I remember going to this place and being in awe. At the time it still looked a lot like this, and it was unlike anything I'd ever seen. I've been in love with the place ever since. There are fancier stores, but this is the one that made the biggest initial impact on me at a young age.

  3. I do miss the old portico, but it's still better looking than the Belks at Triangle Town and Southpoint. Don't much like the new designs.

  4. I agree. In terms of design excitement, those barely tip the scale. The interiors aren't bad though.
